Let's remember that, while the DSLR of Nikon & Canon has had time to mature, this is Pentax' first venture into the arena. The *ist platform (one film, one digital) is someting Pentax has not done for a long time -- combining two divergent 35mm bodies into at least a cohesive marketing theme. (Rather unlike the LX that sat as an orphan.) The last time they really did this was the M series, with the MX being so totally different than the rest, yet still fitting the theme. (The ZX-M hardly fits a ZX theme. It's just there for students/beginners.)
Anyway, should Pentax be Building More into the body than the mount indicates, then they will be providing a stepping stone for the future. And even if not, they've still got a unit in the marketplace off which they can provide other product options. There's got to be a first step, and that's always the scariest for Marketing. They've entered the marketplace warfare. Let's give them feedback and support. There will be no "no DSLR war" protests tolerated here! Collin
