I was also looking at the ZX-L before the *ist announcement was made.
Regarding your objections against the spot selection dial: I have a little Olympus P&S that automagically resets my mode selection. I.e. I turn the flash "off", and it turns it back to "auto" whenever I close the "lens shell". I find this very annoying. If I turn it off, then it's because I want it OFF!! From time to time, I like to take some "stealth" photos and I really don't want the f*** flash to light up when I least expect it. In some circumstances it may cost me a black eye. So I eventually sticked a piece of black electrical insulation tape on the flash window.

The film *ist seems to solve all the little complaints that I have about the ZX-L:

  1. Improved AF (I hope I hope)
  2. Option to cancel automatic film rewind
  3. Continuous AF selection
  4. Even smaller--size matters!!!

Unfortunately the *ist eliminates one of the most useful little features of the ZX-L. On the ZX-L, you can set the AE lock to "spot meter" and it locks the spot exposure for 20 seconds so I can recompose and shoot. The *ist has a spot meter selection dial, and you have to remember to set it back to matrix. I always forget to set the camera back to matrix metering after spot metering.
