I can't do prognostics well, so I just pronounce my current feelings
about ist D, from what little I know and have seen (the pictures and
specs).
what I like about it:
*price (I hope <g>)
*HyM - HyperManual!!! At last. The most useful Pentax implementation,
in my opinion. If it works same as on PZ1p, it effectively allows you
to be in both manual mode and auto/program mode at once. Very
effective for fill-in flash where you usually need to adjust for
background exposure and keep it manual but be able to change it to
metered quickly is very useful. That's at least how I work often.
*two dials. Again, although same as Canon and Nikon, it is what I
lacked in many Pentax models.
*compared to competition, the 0.95x mag finder is quite better than
Canon 10D 0.88x's (although my reservations about manual focus with
aps-sized 0.95x finder still apply).
What I dislike:
*ISO setting on a mode dial, instead of a button. Quickly changing ISO
without having to leave user-set mode is in my opinion very useful,
and in the D100 vs. D60
*right side design. On the film *IST, the whole design had a certain
theme (which I didn't exactly like, but which will appeal to some
certainly). From the few IST D published pictures, the whole right
side looks to me like it was just fitted quickly from a MZ6/L type
camera, without considering the design as a whole. It just doesn't
fit aesthetically <g>. Of course, time will tell if it's good or not.
Would I buy it? Not before trying it in my hands... But that applies
to any DSLR out there.
