What is logical is "jumping ship" based on the fact that if I need
a DSLR and cannot use my current lenses I may choose a
brand which provides me a DSLR which best fills my needs. This
is not exactly "jumping ship" but more like keeping the Pentax
film gear and getting an entirely new DSLR kit. The DSLR kit
may be Pentax... (the name being the only common thing).

If Pentax drops compatibility, the upgrade path to DSLR from the
existing 35mm SLR is not automatically a Pentax DSLR any more.

If I had the Canon XL-1 camcorder with interchangeable lenses instead of 
my XM-1, the most natural DSLR for me would be a Canon (I could use
the IS USM lenses on both).

I am happy I do not need a DSLR right now...
