Getting my head right

Hi all,
 I have a Manfrotto 029 and a Manfrotto 501 video head. I want to
use the 501 in portrait mode and be able to pan up and down. I also
want to mount a cable release to the pan arm. Should I try to mount
the 501 onto the 029, or is there some special doodad that will let
me do that with the 501?
