The FA 28-105 f/4-4.5 (power zoom) is at least as old as the PZ-1p and it was reviewed in Pop Photog around '93 - '94. I had one. It broke twice in one year from average amateur use. It was just ok at the long end, and I bought a 28/2.8 to get something sharp, other than the center at the wide end. It was big, heavy and had slow AF on a ZX-5. I have had the Nikon 28-105 for almost 4 years. It has never given me any trouble. It is smaller, lighter and faster (optically and AF) and the optics are vastly better.
I know you like it in your Pentax Fantasy Land citadel, but a first hand reality check probably wouldn't kill you.

The FA 28-105 f/4-4.5 (power zoom) was rated as the best 28-105 in it's class when Practical Photography tested it, I believe this test was in -98. Better than Nikon 35-105, Canon, Minolta and Sigma. It took time for Pentax to replace the 28-105 f/4-5.6, but since it was better than the competition it didn't really needed to be updated for some time. the competition had to update their lenses so they could be in the same class.
