I bought the FA28-200 in 1997, thinking I could use just one lens with my MZ-5, but it sits on the shelf most of the time. My daily lens is the FA28-70 f4 or the M40 f2.8, along with the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX when carrying a camera bag.
The FA28-200 is the second generation of the Tamron "superzoom", and there have been two updates since. The latest one, the XR, is smaller, lighter, and uses 62 mm filters. Presumably the optics have been improved also. The Sigma 28-200 is also worth looking at. As others have pointed out, the optical performance is adequate, but the light-duty feel of its plastic parts, along with the slow maximum aperture (beyond about 75 mm, it's f5.6) make me want to leave it at home most of the time. Exceptions are when I'm shooting on a small boat, or at a party, when convenience counts, and you don't want to switch lenses. Another factor to consider when travelling with only one lens is that if something happens to it, you're out of luck. If you also carry a 50 f1.7 (for dim light) and a doubler (to give you 100 f3.5), you've got a backup, just in case. Travel is expensive, so bring what you need to record the trip. Hope this helps.
