I don't know if more manufacturers are going to use the same chip as Pentax will use in the *ist D, but Pentax is the first one to use it.

You don't know this, because no camera is being sold with it yet.

It's not manufactured yet - Pentax has of course had access to development versions of it (if not, how could they design a camera around a chip that wasn't on the market?). And if Pentax has had the chip during development, I believe that they had the chance to give input to Sony about the performance.

They must have.

Why? Sony has been making sensors for years, for bigger customers. They give Pentax a pin out and an interface to design with. They give them engineering samples so they have something to play with. There is no reason to think that this is a custome chip for Pentax , or that they had any input.

If Pentax didn't wanted to cooperate, if they simply wanted to buy a chip - they could have bought the very same chip as Nikon is using in the D100. But they're not, they have designed a camera around a chip which isn't in production yet. I haven't seen any annoucements from other makers about to have this chip in their products, so I think we can safely assume

Why? You can assume anything you like, no matter how nonsensical it is. Don't speak for anyone else. For all you know the old sensor could be too expensive for Pentax to use, so they are just waiting for a new one that is cheaper to make. The Pentax camera has to sell for much less than the Nikon. There are any number of reasons that are at least as reasonable as yours for what may be going on.

that Pentax are going to be the only one - at least in the beginning. Other may follow later. I don't know.

No shit.
