I posted the above to a knowledgeable friend who's on AOL, and here's
his answer:

   Yup, absolutely true. But there is a work-around. If they go to:

http://www.aol.com/aolmail/

...and log on, they can create and send e-mail that is plain text.
I've composed and sent this note using that route :-)

Not belonging to AOL any longer, I can't vouch for anything, but this
may be a way out... I hope it works for you.
