Actually the compression is caused by the perspective. Perspective is a
function of distance. If you shot the same scene with a 500mm and a 28mm the
perspective would be the same. Only the 500mm gives you a small area in the
middle of the shot, if you enlarge the same area from the 28mm the
perspective of the images would appear exactly the same.

Exactly. The strange "compressed" view we get from a 500mm should be compared with looking at the world through a 10X binocular.


A wide-angle appears to me as more "natural". 15mm corresponding to... zen vision. But this is another matter.
