With onboard computers in todays cameras it would be simple to have a different protocol for different lens series, after all we know what protocol an *ist selects for K/M series lenses.
If that is the case, the *ist could possibly use one protocol for A and F lenses, another for FA lenses to handle the MTF data and distance data etc, and if FAJ lenses have aperture motors then use yet another protocol to control them.
