With onboard computers in todays cameras it would be simple to have a
different protocol for different lens series, after all we know what
protocol an *ist selects for K/M series lenses.

If that is the case, the *ist could possibly use one protocol for A and F
lenses, another for FA lenses to handle the MTF data and distance data etc,
and if FAJ lenses have aperture motors then use yet another protocol to
control them.

Aperture motors would be preferable, I think, to the use of the stopdown
lever to set aperture values in view of the suspicions of erratic setting
that I've read from time to time.
