Bruce,
A thoughtful post. I see all this wailing and moaning about the d*ist, and
like you, I can't get too excited. I will probably migrate to medium format
someday but still keep my 35 mm stuff. I fully expect that it will outlast me.
In fact, I have been enjoying going backward in time to the screwmounts of
35-40 years ago. I've been shooting with an old ES and building up a kit of SMC
Takumar lenses. They are really good quality. The size and finish reminds
me of the 'limited' lens line. Operation with the ES and ESII are much like an
ME Super.
If I can be happy shooting a '60's camera today, I'd love to try an MZ-S in
2040... (I should live so long!)
More seriously, the Caveman was leading us on with his comparison of full
digital projection vs full film projected, but there is truth to this comparison.
In 2040 when they go back to look at those cute photos of Grandpa as a
little boy and try to compare them to little Jimmy, there won't be much detail in
that 1040x780 pixel image. You'll be able to tell that little Jimmy has hair,
two eyes, a nose, a mouth, and hands and feet like Grandpa did. Much more I
won't guarantee...
Cleaning up after my Uncle's death, we came upon a picture of my Grandfather.
He'd be over 105 now, and he couldn't have been over 10 in the picture. It
must have been a cheap Kodak print ('You take the picture, we do the rest'),
but I suspect it will beat the digitals that are being saved today.
Regards, Bob S.
