Hi Rudiger I was wondering if I am the first person to buy an *ist. It'd be nice to think so. <vbg>
I've still got a Z-1p, MZ-3, I've had MZ-50, MZ-5n, played with friend's MZ-7 etc. That's just the AF cameras. My first thoughts of the *ist are a little mixed. The ergonomics of the camera, for me, are good. Better than any of the MZ series (excepting the MZ-S). It is deeper, more like the Z-1p, which feels much better in my hands. The AF is interesting. Using a F50 1.7, the AF was very quick to find focus automatically. When it hunted from one extreme to the other, however, it seems incredibly slow. It isn't any slower than the MZ-3, the pitch of the AF motor is lower on the *ist. One thing that surprised me a tad was using the AF-C setting, the camera will fire without focus confirmation. I don't know if this is a "feature" or a bug. I pointed the camera at a blank wall, a sure fire way to get AF cameras to hunt, and in AF-C mode the camera would fire as soon as the shutter release button is pushed all the way in. I'm still to completely run a roll of film through the camera, so I can't tell what the metering system is like. The film transport noise isn't much different to the MZ-3, the shutter sounds totally different to anything I've had previously, but I am not about to try to describe it. :-) Anyway, I've got a bit of playing to do before I build up a full picture. I'll finish this roll off and see what the photos look like. Cheers -- Jon Relax! Take life as it comes. You can't chase the sun, you can't race the wind.
