It always seemed to me that the purpose of a hobby is to have fun. If you are having fun who the >>heck cares what someone else thinks of your hobby.

I thought his site was funny - as in fun being a part of the hobby. I don't think that Mr. Rockwell intended to be taken entirely seriously. Note the *many* messages here regarding the *ist and the *D ist. Fun to discuss, fun to read (well, for a while) and it goes on and on.
My take is that he is laughing at all of us - himself included. When the instrument in hand becomes more considered than its purpose, the joke is on us.
...and it remains fun.
