Hi Harry,
Most of the ghost towns that are easy to get to have been brought back to
life. That's because they were usually old mining towns in the mountains
that have a lot of scenic value, so folks have moved right back in. At one
time, Park City was practically a ghost town.
However, there are a couple within an hour or so of Salt Lake. One is
Ophir, an old mining town in the Oquirrh mountains, that is in the stages of
being rebuilt, so there is a combination of expensive home, trailer homes,
and abandoned hundred year old shacks. This town is about 65 miles
southwest of Salt Lake. Another is Mercur, also in the Oquirrh mountains,
which has been an on again off again gold mine (currently in production)
that still have some remnants from the turn of the century.
There are a number of ghost towns in the west desert, but are not easy to
find or get to without a 4 wheel drive.
About 4 hours south of Salt Lake there is Orderville, located in Capitol
Reef national park. About 4 hours northeast of Salt Lake, in Wyoming, is
South Pass City. These are both "restored" ghost towns, that is, more or
less original buildings more or less in original locations, but fixed up to
simulate how they may have looked when people lived in them.
Also, in Salt Lake, there is "Old Deseret", a collection of old cabins and
other structures that have been moved to the site and restored, or that are
replicas of original buildings. Think a museum for old buildings.
Hope this helps. Again, my apologies to everyone if this doesn't come out
plain text (I'm way behind on messages and can't access my yahoo account
from work)
Regards,
William in Utah.
