Once I started using a colour head I decided I'd never go back. Yes,
you can obtain those in-between grades by varying your processing, but I
find it infinitely more convenient and, quite importantly for me, more
repeatable to use the colour head. Using Ilford's numbers with a Super
Chromega, I find that the exposure remains stable when moving from grade
to grade.
I found when comparing Agfa's Portriga Rapid graded FB to Agfa's
Multicontrast Classic FB, the graded could pull just the littlest bit
extra out of the blacks, depending on the quality of the negs. Negs
that were...shall we say, iffy, benefitted from the higher/lower and
in-between grades available from the Multicontrast. When people ask me
what they should buy, that's how I tell them to shop: if you're
confident in your negs, buy graded. If you think they may need a bit of
poking or prodding to get the perfect print, buy the multi.
