I read the thread on fast forward and deleted it afterwards. Now I'm asking myself, and youselves: is it OK to use an external hood with this lens (I find the internal one too small)? Or... do I have to mind about finding a light one (plactic)?

I wish I know the long term effect of using the metal 100mm hood. But the bad news is, there is no 49mm thread 85-100mm plastic hood from Pentax. The only one is a clip-on which doesn't fit the FA77. You can use the Pentax 50mm plastic hood but it is not that deep. My opinion is, when shooting without filter, the built-in hood is ok since the lens itself is quite flare resistance. With filter, it's entirely your choice.

Can the built-in hood be taken out? If so, the clip-on hood would fit.

Going back to the screw option, quite deep plastic screw-on hoods can probably be found with a bit of patience. I think the one for the Tamron 90mm macro would fit the bill, although not aesthetically... Maybe spray some silver paint on it.

Yesterday there was a clear metal finished Steinheil Quinar tele hood on eBay but it goes on a 54mm thread and there begins the search for a proper adapter...
