WHen I studied geology at Hunter College I to Microscopic Petrography - looking at thin sections of rock with birefringence (sp?) - crossed polarization, the different minerals and rocks could be identified by the artistic style they appeared to be in - although my professor wavered between being impressed and annoyed at my identifying one mineral as a de Kooning or something else as a Jackson Pollock. It did strike me back then that those who rejected abstract impressionism as painterly gibberish would have been surprised to find that they were actually representational works - just representing stuff we don't get to see very often :) annsan
