The best job of being screwed was done to me by a Kodak Lab. They very nicely processed my Ektachromes and carefully cut every image in half. Taught me something though, I always have a disclaimer initialed by the client that I ain't responsible for the screw ups I personally did not make.
Do it yourself with extreme paranoia is the best way.
