I made, out of black garbage bags, a curtain for the bathroom door. There is no window only an exhaust fan, also covered by black plastic when darkness is needed. The bags hang down straight against the door and overlap each other by half. I used six bags and they are taped to a strip of wood that has three patches of Velcro matching others above the door. When the blinds are in position it is completely dark -- even if the sun shines directly on the door as it sometimes does. I sat in there for half-an-hour to check when I first made the blind.
However, I recently installed (that's another story all together) a new water heater that has a red neon pilot light. This might easily come on while I am loading a tank and so I pull the plug while working. However ... some weeks ago I found the mask of a film I processed was a strange colour for a few frames. I might have forgotten to unplug and the light could easily have come on while I was working. Now, you might ask and you'd be right, why didn't I see it? The answer is a strange one. When loading a tank in the dark I close my eyes ... screw them tight shut. Its a strange reflex over which I seem to have no control. I also close my eyes sometimes when doing something very delicate like getting a small screw into a hole that is out of sight. Closing the eyes seems to improve my sense of 'feel'. No bawdy remarks please. Incidentally, the bathroom light switch is outside the door and so I stand on a stool and unscrew the bulb before I start. Another thing: I load directly from the cassette and never pull off the end and take out the core.
