No. I think there is some confusion about the term
entry-level. 
True, some just want to buy a camera to make pictures
of their families without having much ambition
becoming an "advanced" photographer. But first time
buyers are not necessarily low-level buyers. 
Some (particularly those who buy a system SLR) want a
camera for training of their abilities. Those need a
camera that can cope with growing skills of or demands
from the user.

No, I don't think this is true. Making use of those
"advanced" features needs some exercise. Therefore a
students camera should have those features.   

Besides the *ist is also usable at a very basic level,
without caring about those advanced features. The *ist
is intended to be used on several "skill-levels". This
is how the manual is structured.
