Alan, are there already owner reports about this lens? What about flare? - that is, by the SMC standards, from someone who's actually seen more than Canon glas...
Not exactly any report, but a few asian users of this lens said that lens was pretty sharp even wide open, and they didn't expected that from such lens. They also mentioned the coating was different from the Tamron coating and seemed more effective against flare. However, since I don't have this lens (yet), I cannot confirm.
