You would also need to consider the current requirements. NiMH batteries are capable of supplying a lot of current without much voltage drop, something alkalines are not capable of. Some cameras are designed not to be able to work with batteries which could supply too much current. There were horror stories of the film advance motor ripping the film out of the canister because the batteries are too powerful.
I thought Nikon & Canon did that by increasing the voltage (using the extra grip)?
