I think I have an explanation. Judging from the designs of other Pentax prime lenses that I have disassembled so far, it is highly likely that the bayonet mount portion of the lens is held by 3 screws from the front (underneath the metal ring). The marked indicator could actually be positioned at 11, 3 or 8 o'clock. As usual, due to the poor QC and under-trained workers at Pentax factory, your lens was assembled carelessly and it was positioned at 3 o'clock. It is a mistake, but not a flaw. If you have a piece of rubber and screw lock, you can perform the surgery yourself. If not, ask for an exchange. Sigh... another QC problem. Wake up Pentax!!

I have just checked my SMC-FA 35m f/2 lens and viewed from the front of
the lens the white mark you describe is at approximately eleven o'clock.

My lens hood lines up correctly with the Pentax logo on the hood at 12
o'clock and the removable section of the lens hood is at 6 o'clock. It
is possible that you have a lens that has not been assembled correctly.
