The good Doctor is right. I like the composition. Just removing it would, I think, ruin it.
If the trashcan was some other object, a bush or small tree or a large rock, would the overall effect be different? Or, is the fact that there's anything there at all what's disturbing? The trash can lends some sort of incongruity to the scene, I'll admit. Not as much as if there was a dead donkey lying there, but still... Good conversation, what with the opposing views!
