For kids something smaller might be easier to handle. I've found
that the Pentax ME is generally quite undervalued on eBay
(largely because of the ready availability of the ME Super) and
they often sell for under $100.00 in excellent condition with
the 50/2.0 lens. In the hands of kids, the ME's metal top plate,
as opposed to the plastic top plate of the ME Super, would
represent a durability advantage ;) The disadvantage of the ME
would be the lack of manual exposure mode if you're trying to
teach your kids the fundamentals of exposure. 
I've got one I'd sell for $80.00 with an M-50/2.0 if you're
interested (or if anyone else is, for that matter).
