To put the compensation in the chip instead of in the lens.
If this is transferrable to system-SLRs with interchangeable lenses, that
is.

I would expect that the camera will need info about the focal length
of the lens, so that it can only be used with FA lenses.

Oh, well... It's not a Pentax product anyway...:-(
