At first glance that would seem so, Paul. The istD is specified to get only
100 shots from a set of AA alkalines. However it should get somewhere around
450 shots per charge from a set of NiMh batteries. It is spec'ed at 1000
shots from a set of lithiums. The CRV23s (takes 2) are expensive ($18 a pair
at Wal-Mart), but AA lithiums are $10 for 4 which is about 1/2 the price.
So, yes, AA alkalines are only an emergency power source, but the fact the
istD takes AA cells give you lots of power options.

Mark Roberts took one look at the 6V-DC-in jack on the camera and started
talking about making an external 6V battery pack. A 4-amp-hour 6-volt
gel-cell ought to run the camera forever between charges.
