I popped into The Camera Exchange (my preferred dealer) yesterday and asked
nicely if they could arrange a test of a *ist-D when it is available.
I got a call back today to say that they expect to have one in two weeks and
the price would be AUD$2675 (inc tax) if I decide to buy. (EOS 10D is $2900
locally). Apparently there is another person lined up for a test too.

Just on the off chance (as they don't usually stock Pentax) I tried the
Vanbar website. The link below shows the results. Basically AUD$42 cheaper
again at AUD$2632 and interestingly a US export price of US$1496.88 is
listed. The picture shows a film *ist but the specs are all correct.

You will also see the Oly E1 listed with an estimated price of AUD$3850!!!
and a US export price of US$2187.50

I expect that I will buy from The Camera Exchange as I am very happy with
their service but I am abslutely amazed that the Australian price is the
same as the US price. If only I could buy lenses locally at B&H prices!
