I suggest that you pre-focus the lens and set the vivitar extension so they give you the magnification that you want and then do your focusing by moving the camera toward and away from the subject. It's much less frustrating that way. In my experience, trying to focus the camera and hold it steady at the same time when your depth of field is only a quarter inch is an exercise in futility. I recommend a macro focusing rail mounted on a tripod if you're going to get serious about macro photography.
