I think that I did it once on a rare Pentax lens.  The Buy-it-Now price was 
expensive, but one of the offshore buyers or somebody with deep pockets was 
bound to snap it up.  I thought it was a good idea to bid and put the lens 
into play.  It gave the rest the pdml a chance to see and bid on it.  As a 
result, it went for $5 over the Buy-it-Now price, but everybody had a shot at 
it.

I've benefited from a couple of bargains thru Buy-it-Now.  I suppose the new 
method lets you snap up those bargains a little longer if they use a reserve 
price.
