I think it may be more complicated than that. When you set an A lens to A, the little pin rises outward. However, when you set an F or FA lens to A, this does not happen. It may need a circuit to be completed inside the lens.

I have one A lens that was defective, in that the little pin did not pop up properly, and a body would not recognize it as an A lens. I managed to fix it by stuffing some aluminum foil inside the little hole (and holding it on with aluminum sticky tape).
