It is not as good as the 24-35 (from what I've read here). I once had the slightly different M version. It would pic the tone of the surroundings because of flare. Fresh white snow, taken under the sun (sun in the back), in a coniferous forest, was clearly greenish. Pentax soon changed the optical construction and the A version is said to be better in this regard.

A 24-50/4 would replace (among other lenses) a normal 50/1.7 or 1/.4 lens, which is a "perfect" lens and unequalled in most aspects by any zoom, so that doesn't make sense for me, while I think of the 24-35 as a valuable replacement for a 28mm.

The 24-50mm would make an excellent snapshots lens, especially for black and white, as contrast is not as desirable here.

Yeah, I thought about that, but I figured a more limited
zoom below my 35-70 might yield better quality or at least
a smaller package.  Overlap could be useful.... How good is
the A 24-50?

What about the A or F 24-50mm f/4 for the wide angle?
