Hi Paul

Yup. In a sense, this is from the LENS perspective... because it is the
lenses made
in this mounting which fit not only spotmatics (still IMHO, the better M42
cameras
made) but probably 75% of all 35mm SLR cameras ever made through the use of
adaptors (which may, or may not, contain a negative element).

To give you an idea:
Q: What can you do with an Pentax SMC Super Takumar 50/1.4 which costs
US$50?
You can:
1. Mount it on a M42 mount camera and use it as intended
2. Mount it inverted on a spotmatic and use it as a macro lens
3. Mount it via adaptor on an AF camera like an EOS
4. Mount it inverted on an EOS camera like a spotmatic using the M42 adaptor
and the inverter
to use as a macro lens
5. Mount in on tubes for the M42 camera
6. Mount it on another camera like the EOS , with adaptors and tubes
7. Use it as a 100mm lens by way of a 2x, coupled to the said equipment
8. Hack up an old medium-format folder camera and with proper calculations,
use it as a fisheye lens
    with vignetting
9. Since it is in screw threading, probably possible when used inverted that
you could hack a coupling
    of a ringflash to it.
10. use it as an assult device by throwing it at thieves (not suggested).

And that's just what you can do with one lens.

To add flavour, recently I bought a Russian made Helios 85/1.5 in Zenit M39
mounting, which came
with an adaptor for M42 (as Zenit M39 have the same flange distance). The
cost ? ... US$70 with
shipping.

But the link you incl. on spotmatics was really useful, thanks.

Hi folks

I've just started a new club in recognition of the diversity of lenses made
in the M42 screwmount
e.g. Zeiss Jena Praktica, Pentax SM, Isco-Gottingen, KMZ/Mir, Cosina, Tokina
etc. etc. ...

Felt that while these were discussed piecemeal across forums, there wasn't a
unifying platform to
celebrate it's universality , and it's adaptability to many modern MF and AF
cameras i.e.
Canon EOS, Nikon AF, Minolta, Pentax K, Leica-R etc. etc. ... and the
versatility of it's many uses on
the abundence of accesories out there.

I will be dressing it up a little more as time gets on, but pls feel free to
join if interested.
