Would be interesting, but I'm not going spend several hundred dollars to find out. This is a killer $100 lens. I think what they did in the early days was try to match primes in quality. If that meant slow, big, and heavy so be it...
I forgot to mention, 28-85 is my favorite "normal" zoom. Good 3:1 range, yet they are not trying to do too much with it. Great overall compromise IMHO....
