I've done it both ways, Alan, but I've used masking under both circumstances (as the photos show). The K-mount flange does not come off as a simple one-piece chunk of metal (easy to clean filings off of when the procedure is done) - there are still some good "nooks and crannies" for metal filings to do some damage if left behind.
