I don't know, but the *ist D sample taken by the kit lens sucks. However, it is impossible to tell if the lens was the flaw.

has anyone already compared theese lenses (esp. the optical results)? I
wonder if it makes sense to buy the *istD-kit or to save the money for
the 18-35 and get an 20-35 which is better built and has an aperture
ring...
