A bi-cultural (Austrian/American) ex-girlfriend once told me,
The difference between Americans and Europeans is that Americans
think a hundred years is a long time, and Europeans think that
a hundred miles is a long distance. Stuff I've seen elsewhere
supports this (up to and including hearing of a German planning
to visit a Canadian friend of mine, who figured he could just
drive easily 4/5 of the way across Canada in a few days to visit
another friend, because it was only a trip across one country
after all).
