Hi Brian, welcome to the list. I too have found wal-mart's CD's to have a very blocky mosaic pattern to them. If you use Photoshop (full or elements, not LE) Applied Science Fiction www.asf.com has a set of Photoshop plug-ins that are useful. Digital GEM can help get rid of the blocky mosaic. though if applied too heavily the image takes on a bit of an illustration look. The three (GEM, ROC, SHO) are very useful and I recommend them highly.
I shot a few weddings with an old spotmatic, of which the K-1000 is the heir apparent. The good news is that if you are not planning to go digital or auto-focus soon there are some great deals on some K and M series lenses. I would recommend finding a K 35/3.5. a highly regarded lens on the list. Shooting weddings this allows you to "zone focus" for the candids. Set the lens and flash for F8 and set the focus to 10' everything from 6"- 15' will be in focus which will be 90% of the candid you'll do. A 28 will work also but I find it too wide angle of a look for my tastes. You will find the PDML a wealth of info on things Pentax, though often too good at "enablement" :) Nicely done up site.
