Most multi-point auto focus cameras pick the closest subject to focus on. This function is geared toward the total amateur point and shoot photographer who shoots mostly his or her friends and family in front of historic buildings, scenery and other vacation favorites and usually uses "stand in front of that thing" as their only compositional rule. You are all correct, this function is not for you. The thinking photographer will want to decide for himself/herself what the camera should focus on.
