Yes, the lens is mounted directly to the tripod head and the camera just sort of hangs on the end. Depending on the tripod head that you have (or are looking at) you may need a quick-release plate for the lens that matches the head.
The 170-500 is probably a big lens. you want a sturdy tripod with a sturdy head.
