An alternative is the manual focus Tokina AT-X 150-500/5.6.
Mechanically it is a very nicely operating one-touch zoom lens, very
similar to the other one-touch AT-X zooms (100-300/4, 80-200/2.8,
60-120/2.8), except (of course) for size.  Optically, it is a little
soft above 300mm or so (as are some other long zooms), but otherwise
is a commendable lens in just about any respect.
