The ES, ESII, and F meter wide open with the correct lenses, stop down with others. F is manual exposure, ES's are auto exposure.
The SP, and SPII use stop down metering but meter the same way with all screw mount lens.
The models previous to the SP do not have internal meters.

Marnie,
I like the ES and ESII. Both are fully automatic along with a limited
selection of manual speeds (nothing under 1/60th). If you can live with this, you can match up with a whole collection of the SMC Takumars. The lenses are fully automatic and the last thing that Pentax made before they changed to the original K-mount lenses which so many brag about.
I think the lenses are among the best that Pentax made, with a size and
fit/finish like the current Limited lens line. The ESII originally sold for more than the 6x7.

I'm beginning to think this may be the way to go.
Despite DJE's explanations, I am still a bit confused. Also after a brief read of the web pages, and briefly looked at the Spotmatic F and II manuals. But as far as I can figure out, the metering on screwmounts was not the same as present day or the K-1000. Only the Taks could be read because it was not metering in the fashion that I am used to.
Would the ESII be closest to the way the K-1000 metered? And other screwmounts (non-Taks, non-Super Taks -- non-Pentax) could be put on it and meter correctly?
Bit confusing, all this stuff. Kind of overwhelmed here. But I can take my time understanding it.
I'm interested in the Tak 100 Macro. Would it meter correctly on the ESII? Was it a decent lens?
Only problem with the ESes they are much, much harder to find (on ebay and elsewhere). And I've never seen the Tak 100 Macro at keh.
