After about ten days of experimenting with MailWasher I've come to the conclusion it works. I added Spamhaus.org's database to the list -- which had SpamCop and ORDB -- and now I get hardly any spam at all.
If I'd ordered each time I got an one particular offer I'd have needed to change my trousers for larger ones every week. Since I installed the program only three of these rubbishy emails got through: for a mortgage and two enlargements. I simply added them to the internal blacklist. The great advantage of MailWasher is that everything is done on the server -- before you launch your email program.
