Seems odd. One of mine - bought in the retail channel from B&H had the problem. I seriously doubt that it was a beta tester. It was packaged and sold as new by a reputable dealer. The problem was posted on the Pentax website with serial #'s and a way to test if your camera was affected. This doesn't come across as being fixed before retail production.
Perhaps this was the case in your country handled by your importer, but was not a worldwide case. Production models were shipped to the US at least with this firmware problem. It was fixed early in production because the second MZ-S that I purchased did not have this problem.
