What's BTL (other than one of my favourite sandwiches, slightly out of order...)? Assuming it to mean "behind the lens" or something like that (in other words, more or less the equivalent to TTL), yes, you're right.

Topcon beat the Spotmatic to market by a couple of months. IIRC, the big problem with the Topcon was that one had to dial in the speed of the lens on the body each time the lens was changed, which could be a PIA, I guess. The other thing was that the light meter read off the mirror rather than off the focus screen. Some said that this out-of-focus image might lead to less accurate readings, but somehow I think 't'wouldn't have made much difference, but what the hell do I know?

Anyway, the Topcon was a flop and didn't last long on the market, while the Spottie as we all know, went on to fame and fortune.

So, to be perfectly accurate, one must describe the Spotmatic as "the first commercially viable ttl metering 35mm SLR".

Wasn't the Topcon the first 35 slr that had BTL metering?
