Maybe with the cheap stuff, but I none of my audiophile
friends upgrade without auditioning and comparing to
what they already have. Too much money at stake to just
buy "blind"(deaf).

No one would spend $20k for a miniscule difference. The difference
is quite large and very audible. People spend big bucks on audio
equipment because they audition and WANT IT. Far more entertaining
and worth to them, nobody spends more money for equipment that doesnt
sound better. That would be silly...
