Isn't the definition something like this...
1st World refer to the 10-20 richest consumer societies - including US,
Canada, Western Europe (EU?), Japan, Australia, New Zealand, ...
2nd World would be those there wasn't as much wealth and consumer spending
per capita, or where this standard of living wasn't widespread. I think of the
old Iron Curtain (still relevant?), India, Brazil, and Korea as places where
things can be technically advanced, but the lack of personal income prevents
them from being widespread.
3rd World - poor countries without the conveniences of modern life.
Electricity, running water, indoor plumbing, an internet connection to the pdml... :-)
