Does this go back far enough? In the 5th century, the Irish abolished slavery, with the strong encouragement of Saint Patrick, a former slave. It took most of the "first world" well over a thousand years to catch up to that one, and some countries still practice slavery today.
Ironically, Irish people were sent as slaves to the West Indies in the 17th century. But that's a story for another time and place. Pat White
