I think the rule I have seen batted around is that they lose 1% per day. I would guess therefore that you should not leave them for more than a couple of months and still expect them to have any charge.
Don't know whether it would damage them at all if they were left at zero charge for long periods? I don't think so - do they come in a charged state when you buy them? If not then storing them discharged onviously doesn't do any harm.
